Healthcare institutions face a growing challenge in providing quality care while maintaining cost-effectiveness. To meet these demands, clinical nurse specialists (CNS) plays a central role. To explore more about CNS, in 2021 the Taiwan Nurses Association (TWNA) authorized a research team to implement a-year project on “Current situation, development and future perspectives of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)”. The project was to explore the long-standing "education-job mismatch" problem from five different perspectives of education, examination, training, employment and nursing association and the purposes were to:

  1. Understand the current situation of CNS in Taiwan and abroad including definition, qualification, role, scope of practice, education/training, certification, remuneration and clinical outcome and further make a comparison.
  2. Understand the CNS curriculum in the postgraduate program and graduate students’ employment status in Taiwan.
  3. Understand the role, core competency and scope of practice of CNS in Taiwan and propose a policy recommendation for improvement and implementation.
  4. Find out the barriers and facilitators of developing CNS system.
  5. Propose the policy recommendation for implementing the CNS certification.
